This is 3 of 6 posts of photographs that I took at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, CT this past week. The waves in Long Island Sound were roiling from the lingering effects of the previous day's storm. Just like snowflakes, no two sets of waves are the same.

I took these photographs of a male Red-breasted Merganser bathing in the Saugatuck River while I was on the Westport Library Riverwalk in Westport, CT this past week.

This bird continued bathing for quite some time, kicking up sprays of water as he did so. Then he'd swim a few feet away, and start all over again. He was at a long distance from me, so it was hard to get in focus photos of him.

This is 3 of 4 posts of photographs that I took at Perry's Mill Pond in Fairfield, CT this past week.

This lone elusive Pied-billed Grebe was swimming and diving under the water while I was here. It was very hard to get a clean photograph of him. And despite it being Winter, he still has a partial bill ring and possibly a partial black chin.

This is 1 of 2 posts of photographs that I took at Burying Hill Beach in Westport, CT this past week.

These three brown ducks were gliding along peacefully in the water, although they continuously swilled their heads in both directions, scanning their surroundings. I got a few shots of them before a loud noise nearby caused them to take flight.

This is 2 of 2 posts of photographs that I took at Burying Hill Beach in Westport, CT this past week.

These are two different Male Hooded Mergansers. While I was taking photos of one group of Mergansers, something startled them and they all took off in flight. I barely caught the male as he took off. The water spray to his left is from a female.

This is 1 of 3 posts of photographs that I took at Mill Hollow Park in Fairfield, CT this past week.

A group of male and female Hooded Mergansers were in the water, diving underneath then re-emerging and flapping their wings to bathe themselves.

It was mostly overcast while I was here, but the sun came out and illuminated the water spray in the first photo. (I recommend clicking on it to enlarge it to see the detail better.) The second photo shows the amount of water spray that was flying around, which the other birds in the water didn't seem to mind getting hit with sometimes. The third photo shows the male Hooded Merganser just beginning another speed run through the water, leaving a wake behind him.

I was on the opposite bank, so those are long distance photos of the action.

These are some photographs that I took of some Great Egrets at Southport Beach in Fairfield, CT this past week.

I timed the first photograph perfectly to catch the water spray during the fish catch. And I love how the golden Fall colors reflected on the water in these photographs.

These are some photographs that I took of some Great Egrets at Southport Beach in Fairfield, CT this past week.

I timed the second photograph perfectly to catch the water spray and multiple water droplet rings when the Egret plunged his head into the water to try to catch a fish. Sometimes I manage to capture stunningly beautiful shots (in my opinion), and this sequence of photos was one of those times.

I took these photographs of a large flock of black birds that invaded my yard this past week.

I think these were Grackles. The flock landed in my yard and foraged through the fallen leaves for food. They also landed in my Dogwood tree and were eating the red berries on it.

When the flock flew into the surrounding woods, some of them started bathing in the water.
