"How Was Your Winter" - Postcard

This week's Our Midweek Muse theme was "How Was Your Winter".

I am hoping that a picture tells a thousand words, and that my art piece shows how my Winter was. And Winter is not done yet: although rare, Connecticut can get snow in April.

I live in the southwest coastal area of Connecticut, which is also called the "tri-state" area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Because Connecticut has Long Island Sound, and the rest of the "tri-state" has the North Atlantic Ocean, our snow is typically "wet" snow. Having grown up here, I never knew that nice, light, fluffy snow, that states like Utah get, even existed until I was older: the snow here is usually heavy like cement. ;-)

This Winter has been unusually cold, unusually windy, and in addition to "normal" snowfall events, we have had two major snow storms that each dumped about 1.5 feet (0.4572 meters) of snow on us. During the first 1.5 foot storm, because the temperature was much lower than freezing, it was light, fluffy snow, except where I live, it ended as sleet / freezing rain, so there was an ice crust on top. During the second 1.5 foot storm, the temperature was close to freezing, so it was heavy, wet snow. And to add insult to injury: that snow stuck to the snow shovel like glue.

My name for my 2025-2026 Winter is: The Winter From Hell.

Snow as of 10AM - Photograph

Those photos don't give much perspective, to show how much snow has fallen as of 10AM. This post shows the same area in the first photo, when the snow began. The National Weather Service reports that as of 7AM this morning, 16" (40.64 cm) of snow had been measured at Bridgeport Airport, Connecticut. Still in effect: Blizzard Warning until February 23, 06:00 PM EST

Ahead of the start of the snow storm, freezing rain, sleet, and light snow had been falling. Then, around 12:50pm EST, the snow started coming down steadily. Now in effect: Blizzard Warning in effect from February 22, 01:00 PM EST until February 23, 06:00 PM EST. The forecast totals for the general area are 13" (33.02 cm) to 23" (58.42 cm), or more simply, 1 foot (0.3048 meters) to 2 feet (0.6096 meters) of snow, with the projected total of 17.2" (43.688 cm) for where I am! But hey, it could be worse, right?

"Full Snow Moon" - Postcard

© All Rights Reserved

February's full moon, which occurs on February 1, 2026 this year, is called the Full Snow Moon, because February is usually the snowiest month during Winter in the United States. Earlier this week, I thought Mother Nature was going to give the US Northeast a second round of heavy snowfall with the Nor'Easter that was approaching this area on February 1, 2026. But I think the Wind God pushed it further east, so now it looks like most of New England will be spared. With over one foot (0.3 meters) of snow already on the ground, not melting due to the frigid temperatures, there wasn't anywhere for another one foot or more of snow to be plowed away to.

"Blizzard" - Postcard

This week's Digital Whisper theme was "Blizzard".

I've seen other artists posting for this challenge, but I have been a "lurker". I wanted to do last week's Bonfire theme, but I was too late. Then I made this piece before I knew that the weather forecast now has a potential Blizzard coming this weekend, for the area where I live. :-(

Update: I am unable to enter the challenge, even though I am logged into my Google account when I try to leave a comment there.

This week's Sunday Postcard Art theme was "Blue Monday".

I think I misunderstood what the theme was, so I'm not posting what I had originally made, and cobbled this together today. Where I live in the Northeast US, it has been snowing off and on since yesterday. And although the total accumulation when it ends late tonight won't be as bad as some past snow storms have been, it is enough to create icy road conditions. And then, as is typical for this part of the US, bitter cold will arrive for the third (Blue) Monday of January.

I took those photographs of the snow in my yard. When the storm was done, there was about 4" (10.16 centimeters) of heavy wet snow, which is the type of snow Connecticut gets, due to its proximity to Long Island Sound and the ocean.

I took those photographs between about 2pm and 2:30pm today, as some snow squalls passed through my area. Southwest Connecticut does not normally have snow in November, but it has fallen as early as October in some years. This partially covered some areas in white, but it started to melt when the sun reappeared.
