"Spring Robin" - Postcard

© All Rights Reserved

This week's Sunday Postcard Art theme was "Spring".

Spotting the "first" Robin of the season is one of my signs that Spring is here, where I live in Connecticut, US. Some years, I have seen the "first" one in early to mid February. This year, I didn't see one until the Ides of March (March 15, 2026). This season's Winter has been particularly harsh here.

I created this using GIMP 2.10.38.

The vintage images are from an Internet search. (See the side of my blog for links.)

Featured in the weekly sampler.

I took those photographs at Perry's Mill Pond in Fairfield, CT this past week.

Although normally the American Robin is my harbinger of Spring, it turns out a group of them actually remain in my general area year round. But they hang out closer to the shoreline, where it's a little warmer than inland. There was also what I think was a leucistic American Robin among this group, but I was unable to get a photo of it. Back in 2016, I had photographed a possible leucistic Robin in this general area.

American Robin / Back Neck Feathers Missing / Molting? - Photograph

I took those photographs through a window at my house this past week. A group of American Robins was in my yard, looking for worms and other food. Yet several of them were all missing their back neck feathers. I'm assuming they were molting, but for several of them to be missing their feathers in the same area at the same time seemed a little odd.

I took those photographs at the reservoir (where the reservoir aerator is) in Easton, CT this past week.

Seeing a robin is the harbinger of Spring, so I was happy to see a group of about six robins hopping around, in search of worms here.

Partial Albino American Robin - Photograph

This is 4 of 6 posts of photographs that I took in the Ash Creek Open Space walking area in Fairfield, CT this past week.

I noticed white feathers on one of the American Robins that was among a group of them here. I thought it was unusual. When I got home and did an Internet search, I discovered this was a partial albino American Robin, which I didn't know existed until now! I was very fortunate to get photos of this unusual occurrence in the species!

The first photograph is my entry for the following:

Wild Bird Wednesday (my second entry this week)
Camera Critters
I'd Rather Be Birding
Saturday's Critters

Updated Jan 17, 2016: It is possible this was a leucistic American Robin because now I'm not sure about the type (partial albino or leucistic). This American Robin had normal colored eyes (not pink), but it had white feathers in its chest (mottled red and white chest) and on its back. When it took flight, the back feathers were pure white. I need to return to this park to get more photos of this bird.

This is 5 of 6 posts of photographs that I took in the Ash Creek Open Space walking area in Fairfield, CT this past week.

There was a group of American Robins here. I used to think they flew South for the Winter, but apparently they remain here along coastal Connecticut.

I took these photographs of a Robin pair in a tree in my yard this past week. The male stood on a branch near the nest, keeping an eye on me. If you look closely at the left side of the nest in the second photograph, you'll see the female's tail. The top of her head is visible on the right side of the nest.

Harbinger of Spring - Robin - Photograph

© All Rights Reserved
I took this photograph of a Robin in my yard today. There was a group of at least 10 of them here on Monday, February 17, 2014, but they eluded me and my camera. Seeing this bird back in CT is always the first sign that Spring is almost here. (I also noticed my Daffodils are poking out of the ground. They are snow covered, but they are hardy, and that doesn't affect them.)

This photo is my entry for:
