I took those photographs in my yard this past week. I think that bird is a Crow. Several of them flew into the trees in my yard, and seemed to be keeping a vigil. They remained silent and still. I noticed a raptor (Hawk?) flying overhead, but I didn't think Crows were afraid of raptors, so I don't know why they seemed like they were on alert. When I see a group of these birds, I think of them as a harbinger of death.

Hi Anne, I believe a raven is larger than a crow but my understanding is that if you see them in flight the cow has a fan shaped tail whereas the raven's tail will look more diamond shaped. I actually think the raven has a bigger beak but that might just be because they are a slightly larger bird so I wouldn't take that as gospel. Have a lovely weekend, Angela xXx
...I never know the difference between them.
We keep trying to be a patio that will look inviting to crows. No luck so far, even though we have crows in the neighborhood.
Beautiful photos of the crows.
Crows like black cats get a bad rap. A group of crows is called a Murder. They are messengers and not necessarily bad news.
Your birds are American Crow (Corvus brachyrynchos). They typically try to drive away birds of prey to protect the young in their nests, easy pickings for a vigilant hawk.
Fabulous photos of the crow Anne.
