"Hurricane Welcome Wagon" - Postcard

© All Rights Reserved
This week’s Sunday Postcard Art challenge was “Animal Kingdom." Several people I know were having hurricane parties, which inspired the theme for my piece. I have a few pictures of the aftermath of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene on my blog.

Stormy Sound – Pictures

I ventured out and after several detours due to numerous downed trees, I took these pictures of Long Island Sound in Westport CT, a few hours after Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene had passed through. I didn't notice the seagull in the bottom right hand corner of the picture until I put them onto my computer.

I am fortunate not to have lost electricity during Hurricane Irene, which decreased to a Tropical Storm as it made landfall for the third time in NYC. The news says 700,000 homes in the state of CT don't have power. (CT's population is about 3.5 million people.)

First this tree snapped and partially fell, leaning against another tree. When it fell completely, I heard the sound of it falling, which lasted several seconds, and thought it was another tree about to hit my house. It was very scary! The back end of the storm might bring more wind gusts, and the ground is saturated, so the risks aren't over yet with this storm.

The Blue Dome – I91 Hartford CT – Pictures

Every time I have the opportunity to, I take pictures of this landmark, which I referred to as "The Blue Dome" when I was a child. These pictures were taken yesterday through the window of a moving vehicle on I91, first going Northbound, then later in the day going Southbound.

"Samuel Colt bought property in Hartford's South Meadows where he built the Colt's Armory that was completed in August of 1855. The Armory was topped with an onion-shaped blue dome on which stood a rampant colt cast from bronze." source

I took today off to recharge my batteries. It's going to be a top 10 weather day here, so I'll be going out later to enjoy it. Tomorrow I'm riding shotgun on a road trip, and Sunday will be my day of rest. I've been working a lot of hours because we're behind schedule. I have a three day reprieve, then the frenetic pace will resume on Monday. If we stay on schedule, I'm slated to go to Florida in October, but our team will be relegated to third shift.

This week’s Theme Thursday challenge was “Paris.”

I usually don't do this, but I couldn't decide which one of these I liked better, so I posted both. The Eiffel Tower was scanned from vintage sheet music I purchased at the Pequot Library sale last year. The other images are in the public domain.
