This week’s Three Muses challenge was “Incredible Journey.” My piece shows Icarus seconds after the pinnacle of his soaring flight, when the sun starts to melt the wax holding his feathered wings together, and he begins to tumble to his death. As he rose on his incredible journey, I imagine he had thoughts similar to those in the poem High Flight.
High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Junior
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
Anne, this piece is wonderful and truly encapsulates the idea of a fabulous journey! Awesome! Hugs, Terri

ReplyDeleteOh, how I love the wonderful imaginings of my blog friends. Anne, this is such a beautiful and thoughtful piece. I found myself shouting "noooooooooo" at the sight of Icarus flying too close to the sun. I love the poem which is such a delicious reference to the theme.
ReplyDeleteFantastic work in every way.
I've already said how much I love poetry. The only thing better than a beautiful poem is having it illustrated equally beautifully. You've given us a gift in this piece. Thank you!
