White Rhinoceros!!! - Pictures

This is 1 of 6 posts of pictures I took of the three White Rhinoceros at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne FL on November 21, 2012, after work that day.

The first picture is my entry for this week's Weekly Top Shot #58.

I have loved Rhinoceros since I was a child! I had never seen one in person. Words can't describe how thrilling it was for me to see them for the first time! They are beautiful, gentle, graceful creatures.

I was in Melbourne on a business trip. My co-worker and friend Jean Marie, who is one of the most thoughtful people you could ever meet, took me to the zoo. We saw all of the exhibits, but we spent most of the time watching the Rhinoceros.

I have mixed feelings about wild animals being kept pent up in a zoo. But then I was sickened to see a story on last night's BBC news that said 8 Rhinoceros were killed by poachers in a single attack on a reserve in South Africa, bringing the total number killed this year to 570.

What magnificent and stately creatures! That is wonderful that you finally got to see them for the first time. It looks like they are well cared for in a natural setting here.

I share your ambivalence about zoos.

I don't mind them being on display briefly but after a while they should be rotated back on to the reserves.

Great pics. I too love rhinos. They are such big creatures with little bitty eyes. We have them in our local zoo and I always look for them.

I think zoos are necessary for conservation and I think letting people see them helps with conservation. The animals need to be kept care of competently of course.

I saw the same report about hunted Rhinos Anne. It made for sad viewing but also justified the need for zoos where endangered species can be bred and serve as an educational tool.
